This module introduces students to the social, political, linguistic and pedagogical issues involved in English language teaching (ELT) and learning and explores the principles and practice of a range of methods and approaches. Introduction to ELT is a pre-service module aimed at introducing students to aspects of the profession of teaching English as a foreign or second language. It focuses on the central aspects of the teaching process and develops students’ ability to handle the key components of the language system of English as well as the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). The aim is to develop a knowledge of the description of English, an understanding of the roles of the teacher and learner, familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching and familiarity with resources and materials for use with ESL (English as a second language) students. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials through Moodle, the ALC's Virtual Learning Environment.
