Phonology III (LING30080)
Credits 5 Subject Linguistics
Level 3 School Irish Cel St and Folklore
Semester   Information Semester One Module Coordinator Assoc Professor Máire Ní Chiosáin

In the first part of this module students are introduced to acoustic phonetics and the instrumental analysis of speech. The second part of the module focuses on segmental and prosodic phonology. It examines the mechanisms required to capture the nature of lexical representations and phonological patterning, and explores the universality of phonological structures and typological variation across languages. The module provides a critical evaluation of existing theories on the basis of empirical evidence and the formal mechanisms they implement. This module forms part of the BA programme for Linguistics.
