Phonology II (LING20020)
Credits 5 Subject Linguistics
Level 2 School Irish Cel St and Folklore
Semester   Information Semester Two Module Coordinator Assoc Professor Máire Ní Chiosáin

This module examines the sound patterns in words and phrases. It is concerned with, for example, the distribution of sounds in individual languages, the sound combinations allowed and the 'repair' strategies adopted to deal with disallowed sound combinations, the possible syllables and the role syllables play in different langauges. The aim is a characterisation of possible sound patterns and structures cross-linguistically, which is an important part of the more general objective of constructing a theory of the phonology of language. This module forms part of the BA programme for Linguistics.
