Physics is a model of the world. We educate our students to become critical thinkers, bringing a structured, questioning approach to problems. Our students, who will be graduates in Science, Engineering or related disciplines, will be brought to an honours B.Sc. level in Physics. The programme will allow non-physics graduates a clear route into graduate taught and research programmes in Physics. Our learning environment emphasises laboratory work and combines knowledge acquisition with problem-solving work, including data analysis and programming. Our students will be imbued with professional values including scientific integrity and ethical behaviour, and the ability to effectively communicate complex information.

On successful completion, students will have acquired knowledge of a significant amount of the core of physics and skills in the deployment of that knowledge (the core of physics is defined by the IOP accreditation process).

  • Compare results critically with predictions from theory
  • Plan, execute and report the results of an experiment or investigation
  • Students should also have developed their communications skills, analytical skills and IT skills
  • Students should also have developed their ethical behaviour including critical thinking, understanding of arguments and consequences, and scientific integrity
  • Students should also have developed their the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team and interact constructively with other people, and embrace lifelong learning
  • Use mathematics to describe the physics world
  • tackle problems in physics and formulate an appropriate solution
