You will study the French language and French and francophone literature and culture, developing your linguistic and critical skills across a three-year or four-year degree.

French is taught in lectures, classes and through independent study. Assessment is by continuous assessment, in-class tests, mid-term written assignments, project work and end-of-term exams.

The communication skills, critical awareness, cultural sensitivity and intellectual flexibility fostered by the study of French make it a good foundation for careers in a wide range of areas. Graduates have pursued careers in fields including:

  • International business
  • International relations
  • Public administration
  • Education
  • Translation and interpreting
  • Tourism
  • Careers in the EU

    A BA in French is also a platform for further study in the field, such as the UCD MA in Modern Languages, or in other disciplines such as European studies, international relations or translation.
  • Students of the joint honours degree, are encouraged to apply to spend an additional year abroad at one of our thirteen partner universities across France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, graduating with a four year BA (International). Places may be limited and preference will be given to those with better results.
