ARCH30500 - Experiment Archaeology & Ancient Technologies (Credit)- 2017

This is an intensive pre-term module.  It is held outdoors, in an uneven grassy field, and some light exercise (at the scale of gardening) would be expected.

Experimental archaeology investigates how people in the past built and occupied their houses, made and used materials and things, cooked food, worked the land, and carried out other tasks. The act of making—through a confluence of hand, mind, body working together—to create an object that is both practical, useful, beautiful and challenging is effecitvely the solving of a problem. Through a practical, craft engagement with ancient technologies, and by using our hands, touch, smell, hearing and sight, we can also truly explore how archaeology is the "discipline of things". This module introduces you to experimental archaeology and archaeological materials, through a field school held immediately prior to Semester 1 (Monday 4th September-Friday 8th September 2017) at the UCD Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture, at Roebuck, on the University College Dublin campus. You will participate in a range of practical experiments on houses, stone/flint, pottery, organics, food. You should attend in suitable clothing (boots, rain gear, etc) and bring their own supply of drinking water. You should also bring writing materials (pencil, notebook) and a camera. The module will be primarily assessed by means of a reflective learning journal and a project, whereby you make something and think about it in relation to archaeological evidence. Seminars during semester will help you design, carry out, and report on your project.
NB: this module is primarily taught at the UCD Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture, Monday 3rd - Friday 7th September, 2018. Contact Aidan.OSullivan@ucd.ie for enquiries
