GRC30300 - War and Peace in Roman poetry (Credit) - 2017

On this module we will read selections from four Roman love poets of the late Republican/early Augustan period: Catullus, Horace, Propertius and Tibullus. We will explore the tension between private and public themes in these poets, and relate them to the wider historical concerns of the Roman civil wars and the pax Augusta, or “Augustan peace”, which followed. The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and seminar classes and assessed by means of a group lecture presentation and end of semester examination. The textbooks are Catullus, The Poems of Catullus (tr. Guy Lee, Oxford World’s Classics 1991, reprinted 2008); and Horace, The Complete Odes and Epodes (tr. David West, Oxford World’s Classics 2008), supplemented by a privately produced sourcebook for Tibullus and Propertius.
