Detailed Information

Art Deco, The Glamour Years

This course will look at the magnificent history of Art Deco design. Explore how this movement embraced a new world with its fast transport, jazz music and Hollywood glamour.

See how it developed a distinctive visual style.

Chart how this sumptuous luxury style, characterised by handmade goods for wealthy consumers developed into streamline goods that were in nearly every home in America.

Look at the development of the visual arts from skyscrapers to the kettle design and explore the magnificent Art Deco works in architecture, interior design, glass, posters, fashion, furniture and many more.
Evaluate how new technologies and materials such as aluminium, Bakelite and chromium were integrated into this style. Look at the spread of the style through major exhibitions, publications and Hollywood movies.

Discuss the new flapper woman, smoking and applying make-up in public, and look at how artists and designers portrayed her and produced goods for her new needs.

Look at the decline and revival of this style over the decades and see its impact in our everyday lives. You will be encouraged to learn in a relaxed and informal environment and hopefully enjoy contributing to class discussions. We will go on a field trip to the National Museum to look at the Eileen Gray collection.
