The Artist as Witness; Migration
This year, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane is presenting a series of collection displays and temporary exhibitions which have as their central theme The Artist as Witness: Migration. Diverse in practice, from Frank O’Meara and Irish Artists Abroad, to Port Life: Eugeen van Mieghem and Oceans after Nature each provides interesting perspectives through painting, works on paper and film based work on the theme of migration and the role the artist can play. This lectures series will explore themes arising from these exhibitions as well as looking at the wider art historical context.
The course will be taught by curators of Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and guest lecturers who have contributed regularly to Hugh Lane lectures series. The course is co-ordinated by Jessica O’Donnell, Head of Education and Community Outreach, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the artistic, political and social context of modern and contemporary art as represented by selected Hugh Lane exhibitions and artists and artworks drawn from the Hugh Lane’s permanent collection
- Evaluate how visual culture contributes to the theme of migration.
- Understand how artists can play a seminal role as ‘witnesses’ in artistic, social and political contexts.
- How are forced and unforced migrations articulated in art and how do they inspire artists’ approaches to their work?
- How do the exhibitions Frank O’Meara and Irish Artists Abroad, Port Life: Eugeen van Mieghem and Oceans after Nature reflect the theme of the Artist as Witness: Migration?
- How is the theme of the Artist as Witness: Migration explored in modern and contemporary art and the wider art historical context?
