Detailed Information

ENG10060 - Literature in Context 2 (Audit)* - 2017

Building on ENG10050 Literature in Context 1, a core co-requisite module in the first semester, this module continues to facilitate students’ understanding of the historical breadth of literature in English. In particular, the module aims to develop the key skills required for the study of modern literature, the rich variety of literature written from the eighteenth century to the present which has shaped and been shaped by industrial modernity. The module will do so through a series of lectures and workshops which equip students with both a broad knowledge of literary-historical context, and a deeper engagement with the interpretation of literary texts. Students will read three key exemplary novels from the modern period, and examine how each text engages formally and materially with its social and political contexts.
