This module examines aspects of the social history of healthcare in Ireland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Set against the background of social and economic developments in Ireland in the period, the module explores the subject through a number of themes. These include health care in institutions, public health and sanitation, health care in military conflicts, and health professionals and their patients. It discusses the earliest examples of organised healthcare in Ireland, including the first hospitals, lunatic asylums, and workhouses. The module also highlights key milestones in the development of modern medical science and discusses the development of the health professions. The module is suitable for all students of healthcare and is also suitable for students studying in the social sciences and human sciences, including students of history, English, social science, and politics.

Upgrading from audit to credit
You may upgrade from being an audit student to a credit student up to three weeks into term. Please note, however, that you can't change back to being an audit student - if you decide not to complete the assignments and/or sit the exams, this will appear on your academic record.
