Detailed Information

EDUC10160 - Ireland's Education Heritage (Audit) - 2017

What kind of schooling did our ancestors have in Ireland? Have their records survived in the roll books and registers of schools? How can you trace the education records of your own Irish ancestors? What did they learn, and how did it prepare them for life here, or for emigration?
And what about the Irish who emigrated and taught in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and parts of South East Asia? What did they bring to their adopted country? Was there a particularly 'Irish' inflection to their work? What Irish emigrants founded schools and colleges abroad?
On this module you will spend time with compelling historical sources, visit historic schools/education sites, and consider some of the education issues that affected our ancestors and that had an impact on our education heritage.
The module comprises lectures, online work, fieldtrip preparation, and fieldtrips. Students can select either a Dublin-based fieldtrip, or a fieldtrip outside Dublin (typically either Cork or Connemara).
Note: There are some travel costs attached to attending fieldtrips outside Dublin (train/bus/lunch).
Fieldtrips within Dublin require only local bus transport.
