AE-QN215 - More Philosophical Fragments

This course examines St. Thomas Aquinas’s views on being (ens) and existence (esse), Karl Jaspers’ account of reality, Martin Heidegger’s article on the end of philosophy and the task of thinking, the understanding of hope in the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Gabriel Marcel, Emmanuel Levinas on Transcendence, Idolatry and Secularization, Mary Midgley’s interesting piece on what it means not to be a machine and A.J. Ayer’s untypical thoughts on what he calls the undiscovered country and the postscript written immediately afterwards. No prior knowledge of philosophy is necessary though it may be useful. Relevant class discussion is welcomed as part of the course and handouts on the topics examined will be made available. The aim of the course is to encourage all present to think more carefully about the range of topics under scrutiny and to see to what extent philosophy is relevant to today’s world.
