Detailed Information
Art Deco exploded with the jazz age of the 1920s and 1930s to fundamentally change art, design and popular culture. Explore how this style came to represent luxury, Hollywood glamour, travel and a belief in new technology.
See how this elite style, characterised by handmade goods for wealthy consumers developed into streamline designs that were in nearly every American home. Discover how all aspects of design from skyscrapers to toasters conformed to the principles of the movement. Look at how streamlining reflected an interest in science, technology and new methods of travel.
Although many design movements have political or philosophical beginnings or intentions, art deco was purely decorative. This style spread through major exhibitions, publications, posters and Hollywood movies. The new fashion icon of ‘the flapper’ encapsulated many of Art Deco’s ideals and illustrated the clash between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ world. She was the ultimate image of modernity.
Chart the decline and revival of this style over the decades and see its impact on 21st century design. Focus on key practitioners such as Eileen Gray, Emil-Jacques Ruhlmann, Paul Poiret and Clarice Cliff. You will be encouraged to learn in a relaxed and informal environment and hopefully enjoy contributing to class discussions. We will go on a field trip to the National Museum to look at the Eileen Gray collection.
