Event Details

Event: PDCD161751 - Effective Pitching - Skills Workshop
Subject:
Event Overview: This half day workshop is suitable for researchers who: want to be able to ‘sum-up’ what they do in a nut-shell, who wish to consider the commercial application of their research and/ or who want to prepare themselves to talk about their research in an interview.
There is a considerable challenge in explaining the impact of your research to people who are not familiar with what you do - especially when you’re not entirely sure what the impact is. There is also poor appreciation of what a good research-led proposition sought by investors and by funding agencies looks like. These factors can result in funders/ investors not “getting it” and declining to find out more.
Interactive, practice-based workshop
Event Objectives: The aim of this workshop is to reinforce participants with the skills and confidence to pitch your research to various audiences - including potential funders as well as an interview panel.
Event Content: As a result of this workshop participants will:
• Increase awareness of factors that decide why society accepts certain technologies
• Understand some of the frontiers between the academic world and the commercial world,
• Improve understanding of what makes a fundable/ investable research-led proposition
• Improve confidence, clarity and succinctness of pitching ability
• Practice pitching and get feedback to develop and improve
Notes: Pre-course work: Participants will receive a pre-session questionnaire asking for some general information about the type of research they would like to practice pitching. It is not essential that this is exactly the research that you plan to use in the real-life situation but it is important that it matters to you.
