Event Overview: ASIST is a two day suicide intervention skills training course. The course was developed by Living Works in Canada and is delivered as part of many counties suicide prevention strategies. The course is delivered using presentations, groups exercise, large and small group discussion and role plays. The course teaches the skills to intervene effectively with someone at risk of suicide in order to help keep that person safe from their thoughts of suicide. The course is not clinical or therapeutic but purely first aid. Participants will enhance their skills at identifying someone at risk of suicide, asking about suicide and the reasons for suicide and then developing a safe plan to keep that person safe from suicide until additional supports can be secured.
Event Objectives: To ensure participants are more ready, willing and able to intervene effectively with someone at risk of suicide.
To enhance participants confidence and skills at identifying someone that may be at risk of suicide
To ensure participants are equipped with the necessary skills required to deal with such a traumatic event
To ensure participants know the supports and services available in the community to deal with suicide intervention and support
Event Content: The course is delivered over two full days using powerpoint slides, video clips, large group work, small group work and role plays.
