Event Overview: Purpose

To help staff members (post-doc) who speak English as a second language develop accuracy in preparing and delivering academic presentations. Participants will focus on the appropriate and effective use of language in academic presentations. We will look at preparing and using accurate scripts and visuals, enabling students to successfully communicate information to their intended audience. The workshop includes the opportunity for presentation practice and feedback.
Event Objectives: Planning, structuring and rehearsing your presentation
Using accurate and appropriate language – preparing your script and visuals
The language of presentations (greeting, introducing, signposting, concluding, handling questions, etc.)
Designing and using visual aids, referring to research data
Targeting your presentation to suit the needs of your audience
Using ‘voice’ in presentation in terms of clarity, intonation and pronunciation

Participants in the workshop should bring slides and script of an academic presentation they have made, or intend to make in the future, for use in workshop activities.
