FIN41800 Research Project

Academic Year 2021/2022

In general, the major project involves the identification of a research question, a literature review of scholarly work available in the public domain plus an additional small scale research project to evaluate the research question but the major project can also take other forms.
These other forms might include:
1. Replicating an existing econometric/financial study with different data;
2. Replicating an existing journal paper with different methodology;
3. Developing or extending pricing/risk management algorithms;
4. Developing or extending an econometric methodology; and
5. Developing trading/pattern recognition algorithms.
A common element of all projects is that they are highly limited in some way. In general, the focus is on demonstrating mastery of research skills and the development of research question that is sufficiently analysed using existing or newly developed methodologies. Whatever research methodologies are utilised, normal methodological standards and approaches should be defined and adhered to.
Topic areas should map across to staff members’ research interests with a view to obtaining effective supervision. Some of these research interests may be accessed at departmental web sites.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module, students will be expected to be able to

1. Ability to complete a literature review that should classify, review and synthesise previous work pertinent to the research questions investigated.
2. Implement research designs in order to outline how data will be collected and analysed, what research methodology will be used and provides a justification for that approach.
3. Communicate refined research questions, a conceptual model or set of propositions/hypotheses succinctly.
4. Explain how the expected results may provide answers to the research questions and what would be the contribution of such outcomes to theory and practice.
5. Critically appraise the actual outcomes and conclusions and relate them to the research question/hypotheses originally proposed.
6. Implement and critically evaluate econometric and financial modeling techniques used to test the research questions/hypotheses.
