BMGT45490 Governance & Stakeholder Mgmt

Academic Year 2023/2024

"Good governance never depends upon laws, but upon the personal qualities of those who govern."
(Frank Herbert, American Science Fiction Writer)

As our society’s future business leaders, how can you direct and control others? In this module, students will be challenged to reevaluate the role of business in society and make recommendations on the actions and manner in which an organisation can behave more ethically, responsibly and sustainably. To do so requires an understanding of stakeholder perspectives and then reflect on how these can be addressed in strategic decision-making. The deep logic of governance and stakeholder management concepts will be examined to understand the beliefs that shaped them. Students will explore the formative and emerging governance logics (rules, values, norms, and practices) that determine how varying forms of organisations and projects are directed and controlled. It takes a normative stance, critiquing the role of business in society and how it behaves. This approach will help students critique varying global governance codes, policy, roles, processes, and practices to improve performance and ensure conformance in the context of sustainability, ethics and responsibility. It is about ensuring the people in the organisation do the right things and do them well (performance) and it is about making sure the people in the organisation do not do the wrong things (conformance).
