BMGT43380 Contemporary Issues in Strateg

Academic Year 2017/2018

This module aims to assist students in developing a capacity to read and comprehend strategy research from the academic literature and to write an independent research proposal that may be the foundation of subsequent research. We achieve this goal by structured reading of articles from the strategy literature, discussion of the implications of this literature in class and group settings and ultimately the development of an individual written research proposal.

This module provides a basic introduction to the principles of research design and insights into both reading and interpreting strategic management research articles in preparation for your own research and a life long journey as an evidence based strategy analyst. Evidence based strategy analysts draw upon the research of others as well as the development of their own research to address the strategy challenges their organization or clients may face. This module will therefore provide insights into the classical elements of the research process namely, the formulation of a research problem, the construction of a research question, the development of a conceptual or theoretic understanding of the problem, a research design to empirically research the problem, and comparison of results with those of prior researchers to arrive at conclusions.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module students should have acquired the following competencies and capabilities:

1. Be capable of critically appraising the relevance of a research question in the context of contemporary conceptual and empirical debates in the strategy literature and justifying the contributions that researching this question can make to the literature.
2. Analyse a literature review to characterize the main theoretical arguments made, assess the suitability of these theories in addressing the research question, and appraise the coherence of the linkage between this theory(s) and the empirical evidence and implications of a paper.
3. Demonstrate an ability (communicated verbally and in writing) to assess the conditions under which ideas and/or evidence presented by the authors of a research paper ought to be accepted by readers and the boundary conditions under which these arguments and evidence are a solid foundation upon which to base a strategic decision.
4. Communicate verbally and in writing the ability to compare and contrast a selection of research designs and a capacity to appraise the circumstances under which the application of various designs are appropriate
5. Be able to independently develop a research proposal to undertake research in the domain of strategic management
6. Demonstrate via a written research proposal the capability to formulate a research problem, analyze and synthesize relevant academic literature, and choose an appropriate research design
