This is a module in international human resource management (IHRM). This modules provides a critical review of human resource and employment practices of multinational companies (MNCs). MNCs are have an unique business organisation and exercise considerable political and social influence in the workplaces today. In addition to providing a conceptual insight into the multinational as an entity, this module will assess how MNCs of different national origin manage the employment relationship within their overseas subsidiaries. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the opportunities for convergence and divergences of practices and the influences affecting them. This modules provides an in depth exploration of the variance across different national business systems across a variety of institutional settings. Some of the concepts which are explored include convergence and variations in MNCs’ employment and HR practices, government and labour responses, cultural impact on employment practices and the power interplays in the transfer of practices across borders.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should:

- have an understanding of the dominant theories and concepts within the IHRM literature;

- have an in depth appreciation of national business systems;

- be able to analyse the influences shaping MNCs' employment and HR practices;

- be able to reflect on specific HR practices pertaining the MNC company and its workforce;

- be able to appraise the ethical dilemmas in regard to the IHRM practices of MNCs;
