Module Details for the Academic Year 2017/2018

SBUS41130 Capstone Project

By developing a solution to a real problem faced by an organization, students will have the opportunity to improve their analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. The capstone project helps students to master the real challenge of integrating diverse streams of knowledge acquired during their studies, combined with practical, real-world application.

The Capstone Project has two components: the Interational Consulting Project, which takes place over one week in an international location (2.5 credits); and the domestic Capstone Project, where teams work with an Irish company on a live consulting project (7.5 credits).

For the International Consulting Project, students work in groups of 4-6 to complete a live business project for an international organisation in a lcoation outside of Ireland. Key aspects of the projects will include the appropriate use of diagnostic techniques, the challenges of doing business in global contexts, effective data collection and analysis, strategic planning and managing client relationships.

For the domestic capstone project, students will work in the same teams to complete a more complex business project for an Irish client. Prior to the project start date, participants will engage in various workshops to support the project process, such as Research Methods, Consulting Skills, Presenting to Boards, and Effective Business Plans.

The Capstone Projects take place in Semester 3 (June-August). The capstone projects must result in a final written report, which will be subnmitted to the Programme Office by the agreed deadline.
The International Consulting Project and the Capstone Projet will enable students to:
-Integrate various strands of business and management theory to successfully define and complete a specific business task.
-Apply appropriate research, analytical, and problem solving skills to the project.
-Operate effectively as part of a team to negotiate, collaborate, and lead in scoping and completing a specific business task.
-Justify your findings to both academic and organisational advisors.
