BMGT2011D Managing Change

This module will introduce students to the management of change in organisations. The topics to be covered include: introduction and impetus for change; techniques for diagnosing change; change interventions and evaluation; the reality of change management within organisations; leadership in organisations and the leadership and the management of change. A range of practical workplace practice examples of the management of change will be introduced throughout the course through the use of case studies. The module provides for the blending of its theory and practice contents with the collective workplace experiences of the participants, to this end participants will be expected to contribute critical reflection on their workplace experiences along with collaborative interpretation of such experiences in both classroom and study group settings. Advance preparation for classes and workshops will be an important feature, with readings and questions for reflection assigned at the commencement of the trimester.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module you should be able to:Demonstrate an ability to critically discuss contents of the module and your workplace experience.Understand the need for change within modern organisations and will be expected to relate the antecedents of change to your own organisational context, as well as scenarios of change in the business world. Diagnose the need for change within a selected organisation and be able to apply appropriate diagnostic techniques.Participants will gain an evaluative frame of reference for differentiating between approaches to change and will learn how to formulate a cogent response in relation to change issues. Appreciate the role of culture, power politics and conflict within change interventions and be able to identify appropriate frameworks for overcoming resistance to change. To assess your own competency as a change agent and identify personal development/training needs in this regard.
