This module investigates the theoretical and practical aspects of management information systems (MIS) and familiarises students with key concepts central to the strategic application of information systems and information technologies in organisations. The module has been designed to augment students’ analytical and creative capabilities, to enhance their management and consulting skills and ultimately to enable future business leaders to achieve competitive business advantage by managing information systems strategically and creatively. The module will be particularly relevant to students hoping to occupy managerial roles in businesses for which technology plays an important role and for those who anticipate consulting or investing in technology industries and must anlayse firm strategies.

Learning Outcomes:

On successfully completing this module, students will be able to:

a) Discuss the practical application and strategic significance of MIS
b) Describe and discuss current and emerging information system issues
c) Identify and analyse issues related to designing strategic information systems and solutions
d) Discuss organisational decision making, describing the emergence of new forms of technologically augmented decision making practices
e) Describe and illustrate the competitive opportunities and threats associated with Internet-based technologies
