BMGT3005S Entrepreneurship and Innovation

This module is designed to introduce students to entrepreneurial thinking and action, with a particular focus on the process and issues involved in new venture creation in a variety of contexts, whether business or social. The module will discuss the main concepts and techniques applicable when developing a business plan and a new venture. This involves identifying opportunities and testing them to achieve a fit between product or service and market, and growing a business to realise these opportunities. Specific topics covered during the module in relation to new venture creation include identifying unmet needs and hidden frustrations, and being able to approach these in sustainable ways as an entrepreneur or as an innovative employee within an established organisation. On the innovation side, the module aims at identifying novel technological trends and changes in products' dominant designs. The module will discuss how to approach these as an entrepreneur in a new venture and as a manager in a venture that has already reached a considerable size. Through a variety of tasks, students will be encouraged to explore and engage their own entrepreneurial abilities and to leverage their entrepreneurial behaviour in their careers.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module you should be able to:
1. Understand and apply the concepts and techniques discussed in this module to outline and address the main issues involved in new venture creation;
2. Identify and demonstrate the general characteristics of successful entrepreneurs;
3. Critically discuss the main management issues typically encountered by new firms during the early stages in their development;
4. Demonstrate an ability to develop a business plan that can attract the resources needed for market entry.
