Cultural differences often create barriers to understanding and communication that adversely affect a manager's ability to function effectively in international business environments. Yet, with the increasing globalisation of business, many managers find themselves responsible for, being managed by, or collaborating with persons of different nationalities and cultures. The successful conduct of culture-related aspects of international business can mean the difference between success and failure in business transactions. Since very few companies have taken the steps needed to enable their employees to consistently relate well to people from locations outside their national boundaries, development of a corporate global mindset can create a major competitive advantage. It is important that we develop our abilities to recognise, understand and work with the cultural diversity that so greatly affects business conducted across national, geographic and cultural boundaries. A key skillwe seek to develop is the ability to demonstrate requisite sensitivity to cultural dimensions in our interactions with people from diverse cultures. The course will provide students with an overview of culturally specific business practices and behaviours.
