The Graduate Diploma programme in Nua-Ghaeilge is aimed at graduates of Modern Irish and graduates of cognate disciplines.  The aim of this programme is to promote and preserve the Irish language, literature and culture and emphasise their importance for Irish society and European Identity. Students will develop advanced linguistic skills in Irish and deepen their knowledge of Irish-language literature, culture and history.

This programme prepares students for a broad range of career paths, including Education in Ireland and abroad and public service. Students are assisted to develop communicative, analytical skills throughout the programme.

We promote autonomous and collaborative learning by providing a vibrant academic environment for the teaching and use of the Irish language, supported by our multi-media language learning centre and our Student Space (An Seomra Caidrimh) to encourage Irish language usage amongst the student body. All teaching and communication is conducted through the medium of Irish and in small groups. This programme uses teaching, learning and assessment approaches such as oral, written examinations, project work, essays and presentations in the delivery of the curriculum.

  • Apply the use of accurate spoken and written Irish in both academic and professional contexts, e.g. write analytical essays, give interviews in broadcast and print media; debate and analyse current affairs and academic topics; be proficient in the use of on-line and traditional resources.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of dialectal and standard Irish (An Caighdeán Oifigiúil) from the beginning of the Modern Irish period to the present day, attaining a C1 level or higher on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or its equivalent.
  • Students should be able to construct coherent and research-focused argument in Modern Irish in the areas of linguistic and grammatical study, literature and cultural studies.
  • appreciate the study of Irish language and literature as an integral part of Irish society past and present in a national and global context.
