This programme is aimed at students who wish to develop their analytical research and dissemination skills while gaining an in-depth understanding of the past, its societies and cultures. We value independent thinking, incisive criticism and reflective writing. We value a research-led and student-centred teaching environment. We emphasise intensive engagement with primary sources through physical and virtual archives. This engagement takes place in an atmosphere sustained by structured personal staff engagement as well as dynamic peer-learning. Individual supervisory meetings are a key element in the programme’s design.
Our teaching and learning approaches are reflective of our values. We use a variety of complementary learning and assessment methods which culminate in a research dissertation. This is underpinned by active learning strategies, including class presentations, reflective learning journals and the presentation of autonomous research in a supportive peer environment. The MA in History helps people not only to develop their skills as historians but also to grow as independent thinkers, whose contributions to society are informed by their knowledge of the complexities of the past.

Erin Cohen, International Graduate
University College Dublin was undoubtedly the perfect fit for my MA in History. While Graduate School is a large undertaking no matter where you choose to go, moving abroad came with its own uncertainties. Early in the process I had the privilege to correspond with members of the History Office and they were each so warm and welcoming. I knew UCD would be the dream program. The History Department goes out of its way to welcome each and every student. The small class sizes allow for freedom and a deeper appreciation of material while also encouraging students to interact with a variety of subtopics no matter the module. While academics were outstanding, the History MA also fostered a community. My fellow MA students quickly became friends, a family away from home. My lecturers were each generous with their time and always willing to assist and give advice. This past year has been incredible and I am so proud with all I have achieved with the aid of my peers and friends.
