ProfCert Breastfeeding & Lactation

Graduate Taught (level 9 nfq, credits 10)

The purpose of the module is to develop and advance the healthcare professionals breastfeeding and lactation knowledge and skills. It provides a preparation programme for participants with the required clinical lactation experience wishing to sit the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant examination (IBCLC) This programme will commence in January 2025 for one trimester. Applications will be open in October 2024.


Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) approved.

The programme if offered to Midwives, Nurses, Public Health Nurses, Practice Nurses, GP’s, Dietitians and Allied Healthcare Professionals interested in advancing their professional knowledge and skills to promote, support and protect breastfeeding.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

·         Interpret the Science of breastfeeding and its role in maternal and infant health.

·         Critically discuss the psychological, social and cultural factors that influence breastfeeding practices

·         Differentiate and provide management strategies to breastfeeding challenges

·         Describe how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized and excreted in relation to the lactating woman

·         Critically discuss the Baby Friendly Health Initiative nationally and internationally

·         Outline the ethical and legal issues relevant to the breastfeeding dyad.

The programme is delivered in a blended learning format, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness. On-line learning is facilitated through the UCD virtual learning platform ‘Brightspace’. Three workshop days are run in UCD, one at the beginning and one towards the end of the programme, where the subject matter experts meet the students. Learners will be challenged to apply their learning in practice. 

The programme is part time, from January to May.

  • Degree transcript (unless ex UCD) or RPL
  • Birth Certificate or copy of the personal page of passport
  • Copy of current Nursing/Midwifery registration PIN/ alternative registration for GP's  
  • Professional Reference Form  (Download Professional Reference Form & then upload completed form to your application)
