ProfCert Biostatistics

Graduate Taught (level 9 nfq, credits 15)

This programme is an NFQ level 9, UCD level 4 Professional Certificate, comprising 15 European Credit Transfer and accumulation System (ECTS) credits. The duration of the programme is 1 year, during which the student must take both component modules, which are offered completely online, or blended.

 

This Professional Certificate addresses the need in the scientific and biomedical research community for structured learning in biostatistics, data management and computational methods for the analysis of research data.

It is intended for those conducting research – students or principal investigators – who need to understand their data, the types of statistical techniques available and suitable for use, appropriate preparation of data for analysis, application of statistical methods, and the interpretation of their results.

  • PHPS40750 - Data Management and Basic Statistics with SPSS (5 credits)
    • ·         Planning a research study and defining outcomes

      ·         Orientation and layout of the IBM SPSS Statistics package

      ·         Understanding data and simple descriptive statistics

  • PHPS40190 - Biostatistics 1 (5 credits)
    • This module is a basic introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics for non-mathematicians, with emphasis on practice and interpretation rather than theoretical principles
      • Probability and distributions as a foundation for inference
      • Simple two-group tests
      • Correlation and simple linear regression
      • Non-parametric (rank-based) tests
  • PHPS40460 - Biostatistics 11 (5 credits)
    • This module expands on Biostatistics I (which is a pre-requisite) into regression modelling, adjusting for confounding, and methods used for continuously measure, categorical, or time-to-event outcomes:

      ·         Linear regression, multiple regression

      ·         Logistic regression

      ·         Survival analysis

      ·         Paired and Repeated-measures methods

  • Applicants to the programme should hold an Irish level 8 qualification (Higher Diploma or Higher Degree with an award of 2.2 or above) or international equivalent from a recognised third level institution.
  • Applicants must supply transcripts of their primary degree or higher diploma and all supporting documentation overleaf at the time of application. This includes an up-to-date 2 page CV.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTs 7.0 (no band less than 6.5 in each element), or equivalent.
  • Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
