This course is an introduction to a comprehensive range of topics relating to safety and health in the workplace including: legislation; risk and safety management; identification of physical, chemical, psycho-social, and ergonomic hazards; occupational health hazard management and occupational safety hazard management.
  • Blended learning course, delivered in a combination of online and face-to-face formats, with comprehensive learning materials. Delivered between October 2019 and May 2020. There are four campus tutorial attendance days as follows:
    • October 4th, 2019
    • December 6th, 2019
    • February 28th, 2020
    • May 1st, 2020. 

Careers & Employability

Students who successfully complete the Certificate in Safety and Health at Work will be able to advise management on a range of OSH issues in their workplace.

The Certificate course is intended for working adults, i.e. managers, supervisors, safety representatives and others who have some responsibility for safety and health at work or those with an interest in safety and health in the workplace. 

 

The purpose of the part-time UCD Certificate in Safety and Health at Work Programme is to educate working professional adults to be capable of integrating occupational safety and health management solutions into their workplace, and of advising on up-to-date health and safety principles, practice and legal frameworks at work. 

Learning takes place in the online environment and through live face-to-face interaction with peers, tutors, and academics in UCD during workshops, held four times a year. Teaching methods include a blend of online lectures, tutorials, discussion fora, provision of bespoke and professional resources, in addition to tutor-led problem-based workshops.  A suite of online study supports are provided, including a weekly workbook. Teaching and continuous assessment are problem-based and work-situated. This high-quality programme is based on the values of student-support, adult-friendliness, work-relatedness, accessibility and professional relevance.  

  • Apply the principles of hazard identification and risk assessment in a low risk environment
  • Advise management on implementing the hierarchy of controls in a low-risk environment
  • Access and communicate information on a wide range of OSH hazards and risks in a professional manner
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legislative environment under which occupational safety and health is managed in Ireland
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of occupational safety and health management
  • Advise on appropriate health and safety management strategies and know when to call in professional OSH expertise
  • Be an advocate for safe working practices and a positive safety culture
  • Have developed transferrable skills that will enable them to become lifelong learners

Students will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the principles of occupational safety and health management; and be able to apply the principles of hazard identification, risk assessment, and the hierarchy of controls in a low-risk environment.

The UCD Certificate in Safety and Health at Work is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) as the academic requirement for the Tech IOSH grade of membership. Applicants for membership will also need to be able to demonstrate five years experience at an appropriate level in health and safety practice. Further information is available here.
