The BComm is a globally recognised business degree, designed for ambitious and achievement-orientated students who want to make a significant impact in the business world. Combining strong theoretical understanding with the practical skills needed for graduate employment, students are assured of a challenging and relevant programme for the modern business world.

You’ll learn to become an independent and critical thinker and a cogent and compelling communicator; able to work seamlessly in groups; to develop the technical and mathematical skills to analyse and make sense of business data and intelligence.

You’ll learn about the recent themes and trends transforming the business landscape, such as globalisation, technological change, and environmental sustainability.

The purpose of the B.Comm programme at UCD is to develop commercially astute graduates with a global mind-set that will make a significant contribution to business and broader society. We aim to develop graduates who will demonstrate critical awareness of business trends, issues, and developments; a strong analytical orientation towards decision-making and problem-solving; a deep-rooted ethical and societal awareness; a propensity for entrepreneurship and innovation; a capacity to communicate persuasively and professionally; and a life-long commitment to personal and professional excellence and development (Purpose).  We aspire to produce graduates that, over the long-term, will assume leadership positions and will have a significant impact on the development of business, economic, and social life, both nationally and internationally (education and subject/discipline/professional values).  The B.Comm curriculum is designed to develop future leaders through a rich variety of educational experiences and pedagogical innovations that focus on conceptual understanding (‘episteme’), technical mastery (‘techne’), and practical wisdom (‘phronesis’). Additionally, our students have the opportunity to participate in a range of transformative educational experiences, including business internships, international exchange programmes, summer exchange programs, and case study competitions (the nature of the learning environment for students).  The B.Comm programme emphasizes a rich variety of teaching and assessment methods, including lectures and tutorials, laboratories, case studies, essays, consulting reports, debates, presentations, group assignments, and simulations. Students are exposed to faculty with a range of different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds (key approaches to teaching, learning and assessment). 

  • Communicate, in a professional and informed manner, appropriate business and management concepts, ideas, arguments, recommendations and solutions (PG5).
  • Critically appreciate the interplay and interdependencies of business functions, including accounting, finance, operations, information systems, management, marketing, and human resource management (PG1).
  • Demonstrate an active awareness of ethical values and business issues concerning the advancement of the broader societal ‘good’ (PG3).
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of appropriate methods, tools and techniques for identifying and resolving business problems (PG2).
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and independent reasoning skills in situations of decision-making and problem-solving, as supported by the appropriate use of analytical and quantitative techniques (PG2).
  • Develop independent and lifelong learning skills (PG6).
  • Develop interpersonal and collaborative learning skills (PG6).
  • Evaluate the influence of economic, social, historical, and technological forces shaping business and management today (PG1).
  • Explain the systems of thought and theoretical underpinnings that have shaped the development of business and management practice (PG1).
  • Identify and apply the major steps in discovering, evaluating, and exploiting opportunities for new ventures and business enterprises (PG4).
  • Utilize accounting, economic and financial techniques to make informed business decisions (PG2).
  • Utilize information technology to support and enhance business analysis and communication (PG2).
  • Utilize statistical, mathematical, and other analytical techniques to make informed business decisions (PG2).

BComm graduates find employment in private, public and non-profit sectors or set up their own business. Possible career paths include:

  • Accountancy (e.g. professional training in industry, management accountants, auditors)
  • Banking and finance (e.g. investment banker, stockbroker, venture capitalist)
  • Human Resources Management (e.g. HR manager, ergonomist, training consultancy)
  • Information Systems (e.g. data analyst, ICT project leader, business analysts)
  • Management (e.g. management consultant, entrepreneur, supply chain manager)
  • Marketing (e.g. advertising, brand management, social media manager)

Our optional one-year Internship Programme places successful students with leading companies nationally and internationally.
Students can apply to take their internship in a voluntary/not-for-profit organisation or the start-up sector, supported by the Business and Society and new Enterprise Internship Scholarships, supported by the School of Business. All placements allow students the opportunity to enhance their business skills outside the classroom and helps inform future career decisions through real-world experience.
