Module Descriptor
The objective of this module is to build generic and species-specific surgical skills and competencies through problem-solving and evidence-based learning. Previous training should ensure that veterinary students have received not only a good grounding in theoretical surgical subjects but also a broad education in more general areas such as problem solving skills, obtaining an academic level of thought and work, appropriate social/communication skills and awareness of the importance of lifelong learning. During this rotation the greatest emphasis is placed upon training of a clinical nature, learning "Day One" competencies required for registration as a veterinary practitioner.
Rotations are full time and may include evening and weekend on call duties.

Learning Outcomes:

What will I learn?
The learning outcomes of the module reflect the surgical skills and competencies required for registration as a veterinary practitioner [according to the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI), European Union legislation, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)]. An appropriate level of theoretical background knowledge and basic surgical skills are expected from final year students in veterinary surgery, specifically, and other disciplines in general. Students have been exposed to this level of knowledge and skills in earlier years of the MVB curriculum. Students are strongly encouraged to revise this material prior to entry into this module.
