VET30580 Professional and Practical Skills

This module will introduce students to the professional attributes required to contribute as a productive member of the veterinary profession. Issues impacting professional life will be introduced in lectures and explored through facilitated discussions and workshops which will require student interaction.Topics covered will include professional standards, fitness to practice, professional regulatory frameworks, communication, evidence based veterinary medicine, responsible use of social media, team-working, problem solving and understanding personality styles.

This module will also have a practical focus on developing competence in safely handling food, equine and companion animals. It will consist of a series of introductory lectures and a series of practical classes.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:·
- Demonstrate basic competency in the handling and management of the major farm and companion animal species.
- Describe the key elements of the main food production systems (milk, beef, lamb, pig) at farm level.
- Explore and critically discuss the role of the veterinary profession in society.
- Describe and discuss the key concepts and attitudes underpinning professional standards and professional behaviour.
- Have explored and begun to develop the necessary communication, team-building and leadership skills to enable them to be successful in clinical veterinary education and beyond.
- Critically evaluate the use and role of social media in professional life.
- Understand the concepts underpinning evidence based veterinary medicine.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, in-class discussions, reflective learning activities and group work. Students are required to engage in all learning activities and to reflect on their learning and how this will impact their future development. These reflections will be included in their ePortfolio.
