VET10060 Professional Growth 1

This veterinary core module is only available to students registered to the veterinary professional degree programme. This module will introduce students to the professional attributes required to contribute as a productive member of the veterinary profession. Topics covered will include professional standards, fitness to practise, career options, professional regulatory frameworks, communication skills, mindfulness, evidence based veterinary medicine, goal setting, personal financial planning, team-working, problem solving, non-verbal and verbal communication skills and leadership. Many of the issues that impact on professional life will be introduced in peer-to-peer lectures and facilitated discussions which will require active student interaction. Group work will be emphasized with the purpose of building skills in forming a strong working relationship with other members of the veterinary team. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their progress to date, and to set goals for themselves to provide the motivation and direction necessary for personal growth and success. Critical self and peer-assessment also forms part of this module.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

1. Understand and describe the various roles and responsibilities of the veterinary profession in society.
2. Recognize and outline the key concepts and attitudes underpinning professional standards ('code of conduct'), professional
behaviour and veterinary ethics. Appreciate that this applies to you as a student of a professional degree.
3. Become aware of the employment and career options available to the modern veterinarian.
4. Appreciate the importance of core business skills to the modern veterinarian with a particular emphasis on personal financial
management and planning.
5. Learn about basic professional communication skills (e.g., verbal and non-verbal communication) and develop these skills
through group work & presentation.
6. Acknowledge the importance of teamwork and team-building in the professional life and begin to apply these skills in group
work.
7. Recognize the fundamental concepts underpinning evidence based veterinary medicine.
8. Understanding your personality types and the role this plays in your personal development.
9. Consider the importance of self-care and mindfulness in professional life and commence to develop these skills in your student
life.
10. Appreciate the importance of critical self-reflection and goal setting in professional development.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures (online & in person), in-class discussions, online quizzes, reflective learning assignments and group work. Students are required to engage in all learning activities and to reflect on their learning and how this will impact their future development. These reflections will be included in their ePortfolio.

Learning Requirements:

Enrollment in either the veterinary medicine degree programme- i.e. degrees to which the Veterinary Practice Act 2005 applies.
