This veterinary core module is only available to students registered to the veterinary professional degree programme. This module will introduce students to the professional attributes required to contribute as a productive member of the veterinary profession. Issues impacting on professional life will be introduced in lectures/webinars and explored through facilitated discussions and workshops which will require student interaction. Topics covered will include professional standards, fitness to practice, career options, ethics, professional regulatory frameworks, communication skills, evidence based veterinary medicine, goal setting, personal financial planning, team-working, problem solving, non-verbal and verbal communication skills and leadership. Some teaching will be integrated with veterinary nursing with the purpose of forming a strong working relationship with the other key members of the veterinary team. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their progress to date, and to set goals for themselves to provide the motivation and direction necessary for personal growth and success. Peer-assessment and group work also forms part of this module.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

Explore and critically discuss the role of the veterinary profession in society.
Describe and discuss the key concepts and attitudes underpinning professional standards ('code of conduct'), professional behaviour and veterinary ethics.
Be aware of the employment and career options availaible to the modern veterinarian.
Understand the importance of core business skills to the modern veterinarian with a particular emphasis on personal finances.
Have explored and begun to develop the necessary communication, team-building and leadership skills to enable them to be successful in clinical veterinary practice and beyond.
Understand and apply some of the concepts underpinning evidence based veterinary medicine.
Understand and appreciate the importance of critical self-reflection and goal setting in professional development.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures/webinars, in-class/online discussions, in-class/online quizzes and reflective learning assignments and group work. Students are required to engage in all learning activities and to reflect on their learning and how this will impact their future development. These reflections will be included in their ePortfolio.

Learning Requirements:

Enrollment in either the veterinary medicine degree programme- i.e. degrees to which the Veterinary Practice Act 2005 applies.
