SPAN20190 Spanish Poetry 1

This module will examine a poetry collection each by three of Spain's major poets of the twentieth century: Antonio Machado’s "Campos de Castilla", Luis Cernuda's" Un río, un amor"and Federico García Lorca's" Romancero gitano". The course will primarily focus on close readings but will also introduce students to the literary precursors and artistic movements that inspired these collections as well as considering the socio-political environments that informed their content.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

 Classify, describe and interpret key trends in works by major Spanish poets.
 Discuss and evaluate crucial chapters in Spanish intellectual life.
 Modify and improve their own command of the Spanish language.
 Reflect, elaborate on their thinking, and produce reasoned arguments on literature and literary topics.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is largely lecture-based. There is a particular emphasis on developing strong academic writing skills. Contact hours will be conducted in the virtual classroom and will be directed by the university timetable. All students will be fully supported in their learning , and active participation in the module's different aspects is expected.
