SPAN20150 Spanish to English Translation

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module will focus on translation from Spanish into English.The primary emphasis will be on texts of a literary and philosophical nature. The approach to work will be very much a hands-on, practical one.This module may well appeal to native speakers of Spanish who are keen to improve their written English, as well as to students of Spanish who have an intermediately good command of the language (CEFR circa B1/B2) and are keen to be challenged.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:translate from Spanish into English with greater fluency;produce better writing in both languages; reason out,articulate and reflect on issues in and around translation.

Indicative Module Content:

Translation. The Spanish and English languages.Grammatical intricacies.Using translation exercises to boost students' competence in Spanish itself.

Weeks 1-5 = Practice in and assessment of translation skills
Week 6 = Reading Week
Weeks 7-11= Practice in and assessment of translation skills.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In-class practice in sound habits in translation; this will be a very interactive aspect. Students will be tested on an on-going basis. Task-based and reflective learning.Contact hours will be conducted in the virtual classroom and will be directed by the university timetable.All students will be fully supported in their learning,and active participation in the module's different aspects is expected.
