On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Write and read texts on topics related to the cultures of Spain and Latin America;
- Use a good range of vocabulary to express themselves with accuracy in written texts and in oral interaction on topics related to Hispanic culture;
- Demonstrate a reasonable degree of grammatical control, accuracy and sentence structures in written and spoken language, in particular using the present subjunctive;
- Employ sufficient communication skills to speak about a topic related to Hispanic culture in a natural dialogue;
- Express personal opinions about information arising from authentic materials (aural or written).
Indicative summary of topics. The contents may vary.
Weekly small group tutorials based on the dossier. The themes include:
Spanish culture: Catalonia & Basque Country (cultural traditions and reasons for wanting independence)
Latin American culture: Mexico, Guatemala, and Argentina (topics include Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, environmental issues in Guatemala, the history of Tango in Argentina).
The specifically grammar-based contents include:
- the passive voice;
- direct and indirect object pronouns;
- an introduction to the subjunctive and uses of the subjunctive in the following areas:
- subordinated noun clauses; relative clauses; after subordinators of cause, consequence and result, manner and time;
tense agreement and the subjunctive.

Students wishing to take this module without having studied the Semester 1 module SPAN 10010 MUST have reached A2 of the Common European Framework and be progressing towards B1 of the Common European Framework.
