SOC40140 Dissertation

Academic Year 2023/2024

As part of the work leading to the master's qualification students complete a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words. The dissertation may involve field research or desk research, depending on the topic, the student's interests, and the guidance of the supervisor. Prior to commencing work on the dissertation students attend six workshops in dissertation preparation, in which the emphasis is on developing and refining their ideas for the dissertation research. They are also given training in doing a literature review and in requirements regarding grammar, punctation and layout. Each student must submit a research proposal for ethical approval to the School Masters Ethics Committee. Each student is then assigned a supervisor who guides them in their work on the dissertation, which should be submitted not later than mid August in order to be conferred in Autumn.
