SOC40130 Advanced Workshop on the Analysis of Qualitative Research and on Evaluation

Academic Year 2016/2017

In this course the inductive processes of analysis and classification are explored in order to clarify the steps to be taken in examining qualitative material. Examples of the process are given and students gain practice in applying the steps to data. Once students are at ease with this process the use of the software package NVivo will be introduced. Students will practise the preparation, importing and analysis of data using this programme. We will work with secondary data archived with ISQDA and ESDS Qualidata. Students will select a dataset to work with, will carry out an analysis and produce output in report form. The course will give students hands-on, practical skills in qualitative data analysis. This is an advanced module and it is strongly recommended that students taking this module have previous experience or knowledge of qualitative research methods.

Learning Outcomes:

This course develops students' ability to analyse qualitative data in a systematic and well-documented manner (Blank 2004). Students will become familiar with the use of computer applications to facilitate this. On completion of the module they should be able to set up, code, analyse and write up a qualitative research project using a software programme for qualitative data analysis. They will also be familiar with the many advantages of working with archived qualitative data.
