SOC30580 Latin American Sociology

This module is focused on understanding and discussing sociology made in and applied to Latin America. Contemporary and historical topics will be critically evaluated, which will involve elements of cultural development, political dynamics, socio-economic inequality and social movements. Students are expected to be critically engaged throughout the module. Expert guest lecturers will also be invited to participate.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to: (a) critically discuss key concepts related to Latin American sociology and (b) understand how particular global and local historical trajectories have influenced contemporary social dynamics in the region. All key references for this module are peer reviewed academic publications in English. Students are also welcome, but are not required to, to read peer reviewed academic publications in Portuguese and / or Spanish.
