SOC30360 Sociology of Migration, Race and Ethnicity

Migration of people from one place to another often raises issues of race and ethnicity among the people who have migrated and the people in the host society. In this sense, migration, race and ethnicity are inter-related subjects historically and in the contemporary world. The first part of the module introduces students to theories, and policy-oriented debates around migration in general. It provides a socio-historical overview of the concepts, theories and arguments concerning the global dynamics of migration and role of the state in migration. The second part of the second section explores how these concepts can be applied to understand and explain the treatment and experiences of asylum seekers and labour migrants resident in Ireland by examining concepts of race and racism.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate: 1) an ability to critically assess the theory of ethnicity and race; 2) a critical understanding of the social and historical nature of migration; 3) an ability to critically unpack and analyse the theoretical literature, and apply it to the contemporary debates relating to racial, ethnic, and national diversity, cultural transformation and policymaking, especially in Ireland; 5) an ability to write a well-structured essay and exam on questions related to ethnicity, race and migration based on the topics and readings for the module.
