SCI00010 Flipped Classroom

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module introduces students to the principles of scientific enquiry through lectures and group work. Working in small groups, students in conjunction with the module co-ordinator will identify a scientific problem. They will then research the literature and produce a review.
The main focus throughout the module will be to enable students to become independent learners, to learn as a team and to judge the quality of their learning through the use of peer–assessment and self-assessment.
Using a project based approach; students will learn communication and presentation skills, methods of sourcing scientific information, scientific writing and analysis.

The main aims of the module are:
1. To provide a setting with a strong emphasis on confidence building. The module is the first step towards engaging students in UCD culture and structures, and aims to provide a welcoming and non-threatening environment.
2. To teach the appropriate study skills needed for a Science, Engineering, Agriculture or Medicine degree. Critically, students will develop the necessary skills and confidence to manage their time; use the Library; read, take notes; reference and write effectively; group work, and collaborative approaches in tasks and problem solving, and prepare for exams.
3. To provide a framework whereby students will take greater ownership of their learning.
4. To develop independent learning through opportunities for analysis, synthesis and application.
5. To provide opportunities for students to become reflective and critical thinkers, and become effective enquirers and participators.
6. Students will have learned to work independently and as a part of a team.
7. Students will have increased their written and verbal communication skills level.
