RDGY30730 Breast Imaging

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module will develop the students knowledge base across a number of modalities used in breast imaging. It will explore current and future breast imaging techniques used in Diagnostic Imaging departments. It will also introduce the student to the role of these modalities within both the breast screening service and symptomatic hospital-based breast service.
To achieve this, student will be introduced to breast anatomy and pathology, and some relevant data pertaining to breast cancer. The role of a variety of diagnostic modalities used in breast imaging purposes, such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and RNI with an emphasis on mammography will be presented using lectures, videos, on-line resources and image viewing computer aided labs. The student will also learn the importance of quality assurance and control particularly relating to mammography. Students will have the opportunity to get some perspective on working in different areas of the breast care service, with lectures from professionals currently working in these roles. Finally, students will consider current issues and debates surrounding the optimal use of imaging when investigating breast pathologies using the current evidence base.
