RDGY20070 Practice of Radiography 3

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module develops the students knowledge base across a number of areas in Radiography. The module focuses on fluoroscopy of the GI system, projection imaging of the urinary systems and the contrast media used during these procedures. Students will be introduced to fluoroscopy in theatre with particular focus on orthopaedic procedures. The module also develops the students knowledge base in DXA and mammography. The roles and responsibilities of the radiographer will be discussed and evidence based, safe legal practice will be emphasised in relation to the above areas.

Lecture sessions will guide the student through the relevant theory appertaining to the above topics. This knowledge base will then be consolidated by online material, image viewing computer aided labs and practical work. Students are expected to attend all in-trimester lab sessions associated with this module. There is a clinical placement associated with this module which students are expected to complete.

Indicative Learning Objectives

1. Professional Knowledge and Skills
a) To understand and describe hospital procedures and imaging techniques for a range of fluoroscopic radiology examinations relating to the GI, urinary and orthopaedic procedures.
b) To become familiar with the pharmacological and physiological principles of preparations administered in diagnostic imaging for a range of examinations
c) Students will be expected to understand DXA positioning and scanning techniques and understand image analysis and results
d) Students will be expected to have a basic knowledge of the standard projections used in mammography, and an awareness of the additional views, and when the are used. They will be expected to understand the differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic presentations and will be expected to understand the specific needs of patients attending for mammography.

Students will be expected to understand and describe patient preparation, procedural techniques, appropriate contrast media use, equipment, radiation safety, working as a team, patient care considerations and image appraisal for procedures covered in the module. They should also be able to discuss the role of the radiographer for these imaging procedures.

3. Personal Professional Development - To explore how radiographers work as effective and responsible members of the health care team in relation to imaging patients. Students will discuss how to provide an appropriate and professional level of care to all patients in the imaging department.
