PSY40520 Psychology Research Seminars

This module is designed to support graduate research students’ research and professional development. The module facilitates discussion and reflection among graduate researchers about their various experiences on the programme. A regular series of group seminars will use students’ research presentations and topics relevant to programme as jumping off points to discuss, share, and reflect on student experience. Students will act as hosts of the seminars to Faculty members or other guests. Students are also required to attend external seminars / research presentations relevant to their research and, where appropriate, to attend at least one conference (national or international) relevant to their chosen area of research.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. insight into their own research and professional development on the graduate research programme.
2. understanding of the expectations, standards and requirements of the graduate research programme.
3. critical insight into how their work fits with current research in a specific area.

Indicative Module Content:

Reflecting on research culture and values, working with your supervisor and RSP, peer review of ongoing research, steps to finishing, the viva, conferences and networking, public engagment.
Also identification of a seminar/event relevant to your research and reflection on the contribution of the event to your research.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Much of the real value in this module comes from participation, discussion and reflection. Faculty members will join to share their experiences in an effort to encourage stduents to take an active role in their research and professional development.
Elements are a self-directed. Students work with their thesis supervisor and RSP to identify an event or activity relevant to their postgraduate research and attend the event.
