Academic Year 2016/2017

In this module students will look at the history of disability policy, the articles of Irish legislation that affect people with disabilities; key Irish policy documents such as Strategy for Equality and Vision for Change; and some examples of cases from Irish, European and American law on disability.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students will have:
1. A general understanding of the roles of legislation, policy and the state as they affect disability.
2. A basic knowledge of the history of disability policy.
3. An understanding of the different strands of Irish legislation that have a bearing on people with disabilities, particularly the Equality Acts.
4. An awareness of recent Irish policy documents in the disability area.
5. An awareness of key international legislation in the area of disability.

Learning Requirements:

1) An honours BA at 2.2 Honours level or above
2) To be working with a relevant client group
3) To register for the other modules which comprise the MSc in Rehabilitation & Disability Studies
