PSY20100 Introduction to Disability Studies

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module provides students with an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of disability studies. The module comprises four core strands: the nature of disability; the history of disability; key models of disability; and policy and practice in disability. The module takes a bio-psychosocial (non-medical) approach to disability. The focus of the module is on introducing students to theory, research, policy and practice relating to the disability sector in Ireland and internationally. This module, including submission of assignments, will all take place online for 2020/2021.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
(1) demonstrate an understanding of definitions and models of disability,
(2) demonstrate understanding of current issues and debates in disability studies,
(2) reflect on issues of policy and practice in disability.
