Following this module, students will have an understanding of the roots of British debates on Europe, encompassing imperialism and its legacies as well as a broad appreciation of the range of contested and constructed nationalism(s) on these islands. They will be in a position to explain the rise and success of Euroscepticism in a UK context and to evaluate the arguments of its critics. Centrally, students will be able critically to assess the implications of the political and economic fragmentation implied by Brexit for the constituent nations of the UK, for British-Irish relations, for the European Union and Ireland's membership of the EU. They will be able offer well-substantiated and evidence-based arguments on the future of relations among these islands and their engagement(s) with the European Union.
